Playing a drum is an old tradition and cultural heritage of human civilization. The shaft area is the thickest part of the whole stick, though it has a tendency to break down at the time of rim shots or cymbal use. The shaft again slowly narrows down to end with the narrowest butt part.

Drummers employ a pair of sticks for playing the drums. There are various methods of holding the drum sticks such as matched grip, traditional grip, French grip etc. The vibration on the drum head, the reaction of the drum sticks and the quality of the resulting sounds depend on the grip, angle, strength and method of using the drum sticks.
